Why I've Taken ZM+B6 for Over 25 Years

WHAT I TAKE & WHY #4

Why I've Taken ZM+B6 for Over 25 Years — And Why the Aspartate Formula Matters to Me

After more than 25 years, ZM+B6 remains one of the supplements I value most in my nighttime routine. Here's why I've stayed with the original aspartate-based approach.

After more than 40 years around training and sports nutrition, I've tried more supplements than I can remember.

Some worked well for me. Others didn't live up to my expectations. And plenty have come and gone over the years.

But one supplement has remained part of my routine for more than 25 years: ZM+B6, commonly associated with the original ZMA formula.

At 55, getting a good night's sleep and recovering from training are more important to me than ever.

And when it comes to zinc and magnesium supplements, I've always paid particular attention to the forms of minerals being used.

For me, that means an aspartate-based formula.

First, What Exactly Is ZMA?

This is something I think many people misunderstand.

ZMA became popular in sports nutrition as a specific combination of zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6.

The original formulation uses:

  • Zinc Monomethionine/Aspartate — a particular form of zinc

  • Magnesium Aspartate — magnesium combined with aspartic acid

  • Vitamin B6 — an essential vitamin involved in normal protein and energy metabolism

ZMA is a trademarked name, which is one reason you'll find similar products sold under different names.

However, not every product containing zinc, magnesium and B6 uses the same mineral forms.

And that's an important distinction to me.

Why I Prefer the Aspartate Formula

Walk into almost any supplement store today and you'll find numerous zinc and magnesium combinations.

Some use magnesium bisglycinate.

Others use magnesium citrate, oxide or different combinations of mineral forms.

These ingredients have their own properties and uses, but they're not identical to the original ZMA formulation.

When I choose a supplement, I like knowing exactly which ingredients I'm getting.

I've used aspartate-based ZM+B6 for decades, and I've been happy enough with my personal experience that I've never felt a strong reason to abandon it.

Does that mean other forms of magnesium don't work?

Absolutely not.

But they're different formulations, and research on one particular combination shouldn't automatically be used to make claims about every other combination.

It's also worth recognizing that the original ZMA formula itself has produced mixed results in scientific studies. Its specific mineral forms haven't been proven universally superior for sleep, testosterone or muscle growth.

For me, the decision comes down to consistency and personal experience.

The Biggest Reason I Take It: Sleep

If there's one thing I've learned as I've gotten older, it's how important sleep is.

You can have a great workout.

You can eat all the right foods.

You can take your protein, creatine and amino acids.

But if you're consistently sleeping poorly, you're making recovery much more difficult.

That's why ZM+B6 has remained part of my nighttime routine.

Personally, I find that I sleep very well when I'm using my preferred aspartate-based formula.

I often wake up feeling particularly refreshed, even after nights when I haven't slept as long as I would have liked.

Sometimes six hours of sleep feels surprisingly restorative to me.

That doesn't mean six hours provides the same recovery as eight hours, or that ZM+B6 has been proven to increase REM sleep.

Those are different things.

What I can say is that the way I feel after sleeping has been one of the biggest reasons I've continued taking it for more than 25 years.

And that's a pretty long time to keep something in your supplement routine.

Why Sleep Matters So Much for Muscle Recovery

When I was younger, I could push through a lot.

Hard workouts.

Long days.

Occasionally less sleep than I should have been getting.

At 55, I look at recovery differently.

Sleep is when your body carries out many of the processes involved in normal repair, hormone regulation and recovery.

Poor sleep can interfere with training performance and make it harder to maintain a consistent routine.

That's why I consider my nighttime routine every bit as important as what I take before a workout.

I'm not just interested in training harder. I'm interested in recovering well enough to keep training.

For me, ZM+B6 has become part of that approach.

What About ZMA and Natural Testosterone?

This is probably one of the biggest reasons ZMA originally became popular with bodybuilders and strength athletes.

Zinc plays a role in normal reproductive function, and inadequate zinc status can be associated with reduced testosterone levels.

That makes zinc an important mineral, especially when someone isn't getting enough through their diet.

But there's an important difference between maintaining adequate zinc levels and claiming a supplement will raise testosterone above its normal range.

Research on ZMA has not consistently demonstrated increased testosterone in healthy, zinc-sufficient men.

I don't consider ZM+B6 a testosterone booster in the same category as products specifically marketed for hormonal enhancement.

Instead, I look at it as a way of supporting adequate mineral nutrition, which is one component of normal physiological function.

At 55, maintaining my health and continuing to train are much more important to me than chasing exaggerated promises.

And I think that's a much better reason to pay attention to zinc and magnesium.

Why I've Stayed With It for More Than 25 Years

Here's something I think is worth mentioning.

I've seen countless supplements arrive on the market with incredible promises.

Some become popular overnight.

Others disappear just as quickly.

ZM+B6 isn't new.

I've been using an aspartate-based version consistently for more than 25 years.

That doesn't mean everyone will experience what I do.

But it does mean I've had a lot of time to decide whether I personally value having it in my routine.

And I do.

For me, it's become associated with a good night's sleep, feeling refreshed in the morning and maintaining a consistent recovery routine.

Those things matter more to me now than ever.

Why I Choose an Aspartate-Based ZM+B6 Formula

After more than 25 years of using ZM+B6, I've developed a strong preference for the original aspartate-based approach.

There are plenty of zinc and magnesium supplements available today, but they're not all formulated the same way.

The original ZMA formula was developed using specific forms of zinc and magnesium, including zinc monomethionine/aspartate and magnesium aspartate, along with Vitamin B6.

Many products today use different mineral forms, such as magnesium bisglycinate, citrate or oxide.

That doesn't necessarily make them inferior, but it does make them different from the original formulation.

One Brand Nutrition ZM+B6 is an aspartate-based product, which is one of the reasons it fits my personal preference.

I've used this style of formulation for decades, and I'm comfortable sticking with what has worked well for me.

While research hasn't established that the original aspartate combination is superior for sleep or testosterone, my personal experience has kept me coming back to it.

For me, it's not about following the latest supplement trend. It's about knowing what I prefer, understanding the ingredients and staying consistent with my routine.

And after more than 25 years, I don't see a reason to change that approach.

My Priorities at 55 Are Different

When I was younger, most of my supplement decisions revolved around training performance.

More strength.

More muscle.

Better workouts.

Those things still matter to me.

But today, recovery and maintaining what I've built have become equally important.

I pay much more attention to sleep quality, nutrition and consistency.

Because I've learned that you don't maintain muscle over decades simply by having a great workout.

You have to be able to recover and come back to do it again.

That's where my nighttime routine fits into the bigger picture.

Why ZM+B6 Has Earned a Permanent Place in My Routine

After more than 25 years, ZM+B6 remains one of my most consistently used supplements.

Not because I believe it guarantees higher testosterone.

Not because I think it can replace a full night's sleep.

And not because I believe every person needs to take it.

I use it because I prefer the aspartate-based formulation, I value its place in my nighttime routine, and I've been satisfied with my personal experience over many years.

At 55, I'm no longer interested in finding supplements that promise miracles. I'm interested in maintaining the habits that help me keep doing what I love.

Training.

Recovering.

Staying active.

And maintaining the muscle I've spent a lifetime building.

That's why ZM+B6 remains part of what I take every day.
