FAQ
Is NutraSea pharmaceutical grade?
Pharmaceutical grade (or medical grade) is not an official classification. The most important criterion for quality is that the fish oil surpasses all the standards set forth by the CRN (Council for Responsible Nutrition). These internationally accepted standards are the most stringent in the industry and only the highest quality fish oils meet these standards. NutraSea surpasses all CRN standards for quality and purity. We use the term "pharmaceutical quality" to convey NutraSea's superior quality and purity.
Is NutraSea molecularly distilled?
Yes, molecular distillation separates toxins from the fish oil. It is an advanced proprietary purification method and is only one of the many steps utilized during the purification processes that results in the highest levels of quality and purity available.
Is NutraSea third-party tested? What is Pure Check?
Yes, every batch of NutraSea is tested in independent laboratories to guarantee that it surpasses the most stringent standards for quality and purity according to the CRN (Council for Responsible Nutrition) and WHO (World Health Organization). All consumers can visit ascentahealth.com to see the results of third-party testing for every batch of product. Ascenta Health is the only fish oil company that tests every batch of product and makes the results available online for customers.
Pure Check is a program through which we test every batch of product and then post the results online for customers. Customers are encouraged to visit ascentahealth.com and enter the batch number printed on their bottle, on the home page to see a copy of the quality test results for the product they are about to consume.
Is the oil in NutraSea cold-pressed?
No. Cold-pressing is possible for plant materials such as flax seed or olives but cannot be employed for the processing of fish oils. Some stages in the processing of our oils require heating. These stages are performed under a strict oxygen-free environment and are carefully monitored so the final product is of the highest quality and purity.
Can I cook with NutraSea?
No. You can mix NutraSea with cold food, always remembering that NutraSea should never be heated. Heat will damage the oil and cause it to become unsafe for consumption. NutraSea is great in salad dressings, mixed in a fruit smoothie or blended in yogurt. This is a helpful way to administer the oil to a child who will not take it directly from a spoon.
What is the difference between EPA and DHA?
Both EPA and DHA are active forms of the omega-3 family. They have a similar structure but play very different roles in the body. Put simply, DHA's role is structural/functional and EPA's role is regulatory. DHA is an extremely important component of cellular membranes and is highly concentrated in all nervous system tissue including the brain and eyes. Without DHA, the cells do not function properly and can lead to degeneration of the tissue. EPA is the precursor to a class of hormone-like chemicals called eicosanoids. Eicosanoids play a vital role in regulating things such as inflammation, blood pressure, blood clotting, immune function, and cell growth.
Why can NutraSea become cloudy in the refrigerator? Is it harmful?
The development of cloudy sediment near the bottom of the bottle after refrigeration is completely normal and does not affect quality. All natural oils and liquids have a temperature at which the liquid will change from a fluid to a solid state. For example, water will turn from a liquid to a solid at 0 degrees Celsius. The cloudy appearance of the oil is the result of too low a temperature; this may be avoided by keeping it stored in the fridge door. When the product is shaken or left out for a short time prior to consumption the cloudiness disappears.
Is NutraSea beneficial and safe to consume while pregnant and nursing?
Yes. NutraSea original formula is safe to consume during pregnancy and while nursing. Always consult with a doctor or naturopath for advice in any specific case. The high potency formula is not recommended during pregnancy or while nursing. NutraSea original formula supplies the omega-3 fatty acids that are vital to the healthy development of the fetal brain and nervous system. It also benefits the mother as low omega-3 levels in pregnant or nursing women have been linked to an increase in post partum depression. Unlike eating whole fish and seafood, a fish oil supplement is a safe and healthy way to ensure optimal omega-3 during pregnancy and nursing.
How will the cholesterol in NutraSea affect my blood cholesterol levels?
NutraSea has a beneficial effect on blood cholesterol levels by raising the level of the “good” cholesterol (HDL) to offset the levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL). Numerous studies have demonstrated that fish oil consumption plays a valuable role in lowering blood cholesterol levels and improving cardiovascular health. One serving of NutraSea provides only 15mg of cholesterol.
How does flax oil compare to NutraSea?
Scientific research states that the conversion of a plant-based form of omega-3, like flax seed, (as well as other forms like borage, hemp or walnut oil) is not metabolized effectively by our bodies. The essential fatty acid ALA that comes from flax is converted into EPA and DHA in insignificant amounts (3.8% and 1% respectively). A fish oil derived source of omega-3 is more potent and easily metabolized by our systems. Fish oil provides the active forms of omega-3 EPA and DHA directly to us. Fish oil is the direct and most efficient source of omega-3.
NutraSea is a fat - will I gain weight from taking it?
No, the consumption of omega-3 fish oils can promote weight loss by stimulating metabolism and the burning of stored fat. The omega-3 fatty acids work at the cellular level and do not become fat stores. The body uses essential fatty acids as building blocks to repair damaged cells and counter inflammation.
Does NutraSea contain protein?
No, fish oil is derived from the fish body after the fillets have been packaged for the food industry. The oil contains no protein at all, simply the omega-3 fatty acids.
Does NutraSea come from wild or farmed fish?
Our fish oil comes from wild, cold water fish that are members of the Herring family. They are small fish at lesser risk of becoming contaminated with pollutants because they feed on algae and are at the bottom of the food chain.
Please note: All fish are susceptible to contamination, depending on the waters they inhabit. We strive to source our fish from the cleanest and most ecologically sustainable areas possible.
What are the other omega-3’s?
Other omega-3 is defined as any fatty acid belonging to the omega-3 family other than EPA or DHA. The omega-3 family of is comprised of 6 fatty acids:
- alpha-linolenic acid or ALA
- stearidonic acid or SDA
- eicosatetraenoic acid or ETA
- eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA
- docosapentaenoic acid or DPA
- docosahexaenoic acid or DHA
If the body needs omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9, shouldn't I take a supplement that contains all three? No. The typical diet contains disproportionate amounts of omega-6 and although some omega-6 is good, excessive amounts promote degenerative disease. Health experts advise patients to drastically cut back on consumption of omega-6. Omega-9 supplementation is unnecessary because our body manufactures its own supply. What ingredients other than fish oil are in NutraSea+D and why?
In addition to fish oil, NutraSea+D has the following ingredients:
- Vitamin D
- Natural apple flavour
- Vitamin E
- Green tea extract
To preserve the freshness of the product, NutraSea+D has a green tea antioxidant added to the fish oil. Green tea is 40% more effective than the leading fish oil antioxidant and 100% more effective than the synthetic antioxidant BHT.
1000 IU of vitamin D3 is also added to NutraSea+D. Vitamin D3 is an important pro-hormone responsible for many regulatory functions in the body including bone mineralization, immune function, and gene expression. Vitamin D3 is a natural form preferred by the body, it delivers optimal potency when compared to vitamin D2, and is made more easily absorbed by the body when blended with fish oil.
What types of fish are used in NutraSea+D?
The fish oil in NutraSea+D is extracted from Pacific Sardines, Anchovies and Mackerel which are members of the Herring family. These species are small fish, low on the food chain, and reproduce very rapidly leading to a more sustainable fishery. The Pacific fishing industry is highly regulated by the individual governments to promote the sustainability of the fish stocks. The data collected over the past few decades show that the industry is very healthy and sustainable.
The extracted oil is a by-product of the fishing industry. Once the fish are caught, the meat is filleted and sold as a human food source. The remaining fish parts (by products) are either sent directly to landfills, processed into fish meal, or the oil is extracted and refined into dietary omega-3 oil. The oil used for NutraSea+D is a good example of waste diversion and adding more value to a natural resource.
Is green tea antioxidant better than other antioxidants?
Yes. Tests have shown that green tea extract is 40% more effective than the leading fish oil antioxidant and 100% more effective than the synthetic antioxidant BHT.
Why is vitamin D3 important for human health?
